A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Reverend Howard E. Jones, Jr. has served as the leader of the historic Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, since 1989.
This anointed Man of God was ordained on April 9, 1989, and has served Fairfield since that time, when he was named interim Pastor. He was officially installed as Fairfield’s 10th Pastor on February 25, 1990, during the 102nd Anniversary of the church, continuing a pastoral lineage dating back to 1883. The extent of Reverend Jones’s ministry goes beyond the church walls and the pulpit. He has established the position of Pastor as a place where salvation joins education with sermons that are both inspirational and scholarly. As a visionary, he has led the charge to expand the Fairfield footprint throughout Metropolitan Nashville. Such notable community services include the following:
• Real estate holdings in South Nashville, which include apartments and the former site of the Fairfield Church (1927-2008).
• The current worship center location in Northeast Davidson County in Goodlettsville, Tennessee (2008-present).
• Kingdom Café & Grill, located in North Nashville on Historic Jefferson Street, is a restaurant outreach ministry that provides jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities, and great food (2014-present).
As a product of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, Pastor Jones strongly advocates education within and outside the classroom. A graduate of Whites Creek High School, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and a Master of Education from Tennessee State University in Nashville. He is an alum of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A learned scholar in Biblical Studies, he attended American Baptist College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. One who believes in a holistic approach to learning, Reverend Jones has pursued independent study opportunities and apprenticeships with prominent religious leaders such as the late Bishop Michael Lee Graves, Reverend Foster G. Young, and Rev. T. E. Sweeney.
Accepting his call to Christ at an early age, his spiritual mentors include Reverend Oscar C. Myles and affectionately Mother Gladys Haley. A dynamic and energetic pastor, Reverend Jones conducts a 15-minute Lifting the Lid Leadership call for daily inspiration, weekdays at 6 a.m., now in its 15th season. This tireless Pastor believes one’s actions within the church must also be exhibited outside the church. His philosophy is:
“You can’t teach what you don’t know, and you can’t lead where you won’t go.”
Professionally, he has served as a probation officer with the Juvenile Detention Court of Davidson County. He has also worked in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System for more than 30 years, holding positions that include instructor, curriculum and assessment coach, assistant principal at Martin Luther King, Jr. Magnet School, and Whites Creek and McGavock high schools, among others. Currently, he serves as assistant principal at Stratford STEM Magnet School, providing a diverse population of learners becoming scholars and achievers. Reverend Jones has also served as a guest lecturer in the Department of Education at Belmont University, where he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Leadership.
Rev. Jones is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a recipient of the Pink Tie Award from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. He also receives the Community Service Award for Fairfield Church from the Dr. Bobby Jones Matinee and the Music City Consortium. The program is broadcast internationally on the Impact Network. Additionally, he has received numerous awards and certificates throughout his professional and pastoral career. Pastor Jones is the son of the late Howard E. Jones, Sr., and Barbara Jones, a Fairfield congregation member. He is the proud father of two adult children, Attorney Ashea Elizabeth Jones and entrepreneur Howard E. Jones, III.
